Alberta Foothills Weather

Should have gone south!
Was watching a supercell between Rocky and Drayton move due east for over an hour, but things were supposed to explode right here or just south, so I waited. Nothing was happening here so I headed north for Pigeon lake. When I got to Sylvan Lake I could see huge towers going [...]

Wow did I blow it today! Procrastination at it’s worst.
Secret weather forecast said Drayton Valley/Edson/Whitecourt were going to get it good. I got a tip that things were going to erupt right here, so I got tied up with something else for the afternoon, after nearly leaving for Drayton shortly after noon.

Nice lightshow this morning.
A cell sat right over the house, building, from about 10pm till about 11:30, when it took off to the northeast with a lightning bolt. Went a few miles to the east and watched it zap Red Deer a few thousand times before it moved off to the NE.

Started the day off with an early AM light show. Nice!
Good way to start a day that has been forecast to be stormy.

A nice big cell was moving almost due east from Rocky Mountain House towards Red Deer, so I waited for B to get home and we headed off to Sylvan Lake to observe.

Around 5pm a few cells started rolling off the foothills so we headed west to have a look at one south of Caroline. We met up with the target southwest of Spruceview and watched it build up a nice base, then quicky a large mammatus field under the leading edge of the anvil, then the [...]

What an amazing night of electrical mayhem!
A big low rolled in last night around 9pm, firing up cells all along the foothills and spinning them off to the NE.
We went out to see the first line roll in just before 10.

The University of Manitoba Stormchasers are visiting Alberta this week. Last note on their blog suggested they might have been in the Sundre area today watching for goodies. I just happened to wind up there after prowling the foothills for CBs.

This cell died soon after this shot and that was it for the day.

Good day for weather watching today!
Supercells boiled up off the foothills around 4pm so we headed west to see what was up. This was up!

This cell was out by Rocky, heading northeast. We went west to another cell south of Caroline that was building rapidly.
It had already formed up a lowered base by the time [...]

There were some Big storms to the northwest today, but outta my range.
This is all we got.

It’s been scorching hot here for a week, and these seem to be the result?
The mozzies are few and far between since these guys arrived.
