September 11

Beautiful sunny day here today, hitting27C at 3pm. A cold front passed through from the NW after 6pm this eve, bringing mostly rain. I went out west a few miles to meet what looked on radar like a gust front moving in from the Rocky area. There was a weak shelf cloud to the west of Sylvan so I set up for a shot and was quickly overrun by combines racing home from the fields before the rain hit. By the time I was done getting out of their way, the rain was starting, so I took off east to try to find a spot for a photo. There was a pretty good lightning display going on closer to Sylvan Lake, so I headed over that way to try for a shot. Broke out of the rain a few miles SE of Sylvan long enough to set up for for two shots before the deluge hit and I got to drive home through a torrential downpour.

Lightning near Sylvan Lake, ABI went back through some old photos to see if I could find any other storms on Sept. 11 and found this shelf cloud over Red Deer from 2003.

did this ‘fix’ your lightning fix!?! i bet that rain under that shelf had to be torrential…dark blue core with a white shelf cloud makes for a great shot…
