Alberta Foothills Weather

January 22

Since the last post, we hit -25.6C yesterday morning at 8:06 then warmed up almost to zero in 4 hours as warm air swept down from the Arctic ocean. Crazy stuff. Today we had a snow eating breeze blowing all day from the north again and just scraped above zero for an hour or so this afternoon. The rest of the week we are forecast to be a few C below normal temps for the season, but if the GFS model is to be believed, a real nasty shot of cold is going to blast in from the northwest on Sunday. The predicted temps for the start of the week are grim(-40?) and it looks like the wind could be howling from Sunday to Wednesday. I sure hope it is wrong.. that is toooo cold. The GEM model is holding the blast of frigid weather back a bit, hinting at a early Monday arrival.

On the precip side of things, the WRF suggests a sprinkle Friday, for the GFS a dose of snow on Sunday is forecast to precede the big freeze pushing down. Then perhaps a nice little dump for the foothills on Tuesday? The GEM says nothing for us until Monday. Things can change fast with the models, so maybe we will just get lots of snow.

It was a mite frosty trying to grab a shot of the full Snow moon tonight at -10 with a crispy breeze. It was actually full at 6:35 this morning and I was planning for try to get a full moon-set shot over the mountains, but it was overcast. As the moon was rising through some low clouds this eve to the northeast, the Rocky Mountains were literally jumping off the horizon to the west into a pastel sky that the photo below does no justice. Bright enough out there tonight with the fresh snow cover to read the newspaper out on the deck at 10pm.
