June 13

After getting a nice warm day off yesterday from rain and storms, today things got off to a early start and by 2pm, thunderstorms were rolling out of the foothills all the way from Drayton Valley to High River.
I went out west a few miles to meet the eastward advancing line and was treated to the first nice turquoise storm I’ve seen in a few years. Was able to watch it for almost a half hour just north of Spruceview and the show was scud-tastic. Lots of little spinny patches everywhere and scuds rising out of the mist. Before it got to Markerville it had started to gust out and there was some serious cold air pouring out of it along with heavy rain, and I bet some hail to the north a bit. By the time it got to Red Deer it was packing even more winds with 104km/h reported. 7mm of rain in 20 minutes here.

Wow, radar-wise there were a few big storms floating around yesterday afternoon. They seemed to fire up alot earlier too. Didn’t get out due to work, but when I got home we got some weak pea-sized hail here in Cowtown. I have the weekend off so I might go out Sunday if conditions are right. Anyone hear about the funnel cloud sighting in Airdrie? Some landscaper phoned into Counrty 105 and said that their crew witness one. Nice pic once again!

Airdrie covers a prettey big area now, but I never seen it and I live here and was out in it, It was a vicious litttle storm with incredible lightning and thunder, my son thought he saw a funnel but i discounted it, it wasn’t a funnel, but we had everything else including 6mm of rain in less than10minutes. One crack of ground lightning hit a house and started a small fire in the upstairs, that was only 2 blocks from me and I just about how do you say ( banged my head on the roof of the vehicle I jumped so high the thunder was that loud!!!!!

Thanks PC, I didn’t hear about the funnel in Airdrie but have been a bit busy so didn’t really get a chance to watch or read anything. Yesterday was a great day visually and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of funnels out of any of that stuff.
Maybe you guys did see a funnel Anthony? Perhaps the same thing the landscapers saw.
2 blocks is what, 1200 feet? That’s darn close.
Love those ones that you see and hear at the same time.
More goods brewing to the west as I type.
