———————————————————————

The expected cold front blew across here at 2:30 this morning with a 55km/h gust of wind and a temperature plunge. As the warm low passed right over us, the temps warmed up from -17C at 8pm to -5 by 1am, then as it moved off to the southeast the high pressure pressed in behind it, and along with the wind, temps dropped to -17 by 3am. A 23F drop in 2 hours, most of that from 2:30 to 3:00 when we lost 10 degrees(18F). EC dropped their winter storm watch last night, issued a few snowfall warnings this morning for the Drayton area, which have since expired, and have windchill warnings up for the north and east.

The snow moved down from the northwest by 8am, and there is still some light stuff as of noon. Things have cleared off to the north and it looks like it’s pretty much done for the day, unless you ask the GFS, it says we could get precip straight thru to Sunday morning. We picked up about 6cm in so far, but it won’t do the fields much good with this wind, which has been 20 gusting to 40 since the front arrived. Temps have been sitting around -20 with windchill of -30 since 4am and it doesn’t look like we’ll see anything warmer till Sunday night. Most of Alberta is -20 or less today with many spots being wind chilled to beyond -40.

Looking darn frigid tomorrow morning. -40 at Grande Prairie again? We are going to be on the edge of the worst of it by the looks of things, but it’s still going to be cold. Hopefully the wind will back off for a while.
A nice dump of snow could be in store for the foothills tomorrow afternoon/evening as another low pushes thru BC, and we should get a measurable amount here too, but we also get a nasty south wind setting up for the rest of the weekend. Maybe we will get our blizzard yet.
