Alberta Foothills Weather

February 1

Nice day around these parts, right at average for this time of year. -4C for a high and a break from the wind for the sunniest part of the afternoon.
A perfect setup weather-wise for the annual ice races on Dodd’s lake in Innisfail. Almost non-stop racing from noon onwards and a good crowd turnout made for a fun outing this afternoon as we spent a few hours bankside watching the ice shredding action. A few were going my speed, but they were the under 10 year olds… the big boys are going much too fast for me even 20 years ago. Amazing how they stick to that stuff at those speeds. A few hours in, as ruts began to deepen, the wipeouts started to get more frequent. We peeled out after a pair of bikes tried to take a hop over the bank right in front of us followed immediately by a quad wipeout that required an ambulance assist.
The ice racing tour moves to Cow Lake for the 8th, Gull Lake for the 15th, and Sylvan Lake on Feb. 22.
